The term "monitor" or "momitors" is a general term for a speaker that is pointed at a performer that gives a reference of what is being heard through a PA system. That is why you will hear also the term reference monitors. Powered monitors, sometimes also referred to as "active monitors" have amplifiers built in. Passive moniotrs do not and require an amplifier to operate. There are two main types of powered monitors, those that are designed for use on stage and those that are designed primarily for studio use.
